U.S. general’s warning on romance scams: ‘
Gen. John F. Campbell, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, has taken to Facebook with a warning: Think twice before assuming profiles you see of him on the Internet are real.
The general said Monday that with the help of followers, he and his staff have uncovered more than 700 fake profiles in the last six months since he took over the U.S. military command in Kabul. In some cases, people have copied photos and comments from his page to make the fake versions look more authentic.
Many of the pages look like dating profiles — which that have been fraudulently set up for retired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis and other high-profile military officials in the past.
